Kicking off Week two for The Spring League’s South Division was a clash between the Sea Lions and the Generals.
It was the LaDarius Galloway show from early on. The Sea Lions worked their way down the field late in the first off the legs of Galloway, who capped off the drive with a touchdown, and after the PAT by John Baron, the Sea Lions were up 7-0.
On the Generals’ return, Sea Lions defensive lineman Heath Williams had a drive-ending sack forcing the Gens to punt.
To start the second quarter, Sea Lions running back Adam Choice had a 15-yard run, but the ball was popped out of his hands on the tackle. Thanks to the heads-up play of offensive lineman Justin Gooseberry, the Sea Lions kept the ball. The Gens defense kept the pressure up, forcing the Sea Lions to attempt a field goal. The kick missed, and the score remained 7-0 in favor of the Sea Lions.
On the next Sea Lions drive, Gens defensive back Evan Worthington tipped a pass up in the air, which fellow back Brandon Mayes brought down. A big play by tight end, Raymond Epps brought the Generals across the 50, and after several positive plays from Chris James and Melvin Vaughn the Gens were in striking distance. The Sea Lions managed to hold the Gens to a 25-yard goal by Kicker Lirim Hajrullahu, making the score at halftime 7-3 Sea Lions.
After the break, Darnell Holland made a huge return to bring the Generals across the fifty. Paul Terry then had a 30-yard run to bring the Generals into scoring position again. Devin Gray caught a reception at the goal line and gotten his way into the endzone, after Hajrullahu’s PAT the score was 10-7 in favor of the Generals.
On the Sea Lions’ next possession, QB Deondre Johnson connected with Cameron Echols-Luper for a huge gain. Johnson later showed off his arm talent again with a perfectly placed 37-yard ball to Andrew Jameil for another Sea Lions touchdown. After Baron’s PAT, the Sea Lions retook the lead 14-10.
On the Generals, next drive, Tyson Grahm Jr of the Sea Lions recovered a fumble, which they had to punt away. The Generals punt returner dropped the ball, and the Sea Lions Jalen Choice recovered. Sea Lions ball. Johnson chipped his way down the field, showing his toughness and running the ball several times on the drive. On a controversial 4th&1 call, the Generals turned the ball over on downs.
On that next drive, Generals QB Ryan Mallet was intercepted by Sea Lions Jalen Choice to put his team in the red zone. The Sea Lions converted this play into points for a 33-yard made attempt by Baron making the score 17-10.
On the Generals returning drive, Mallet was picked off, this time by Garret Davis, giving the Sea Lions the ball again. The Sea Lions Galloway was stripped of the ball, and Evan Worthington came up with the recovery. After a few penalties by the Generals, the Sea Lions managed to hold the Gens to a 33 yard FG by Hajrullahu.
The Sea Lions punted on their next drive and after some clock management issues by the Generals, the Sea Lions came out with the win.
